WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -
Sean O’Leary, a 5th grader a College Park Elementary School, was presented with a $500 check from the EmPOWERment In PINK group Wednesday afternoon.

O’Leary has been undergoing treatment for Leukemia for months. In April, the school organized a Relay for Life walk, dedicating it to Sean.

EmPOWERment In PINK surprised O’Leary Wednesday, presenting him the check at the school, to help him and his family with the costs of treatment.

“The 5th-grade class – they awarded us a donation back in October, and Sean was a part of that, so we wanted to pay it forward and give back to Sean what he helped them do,” said Cynthia Simpson, President of Empowerment in Pink.

His classmates have been supportive all throughout the semester. When they found out he was in remission, it put an exclamation mark on the semester, right before the beginning of summer.

“When I was actually able to share with the class, they all rallied together and cheered out loud just hearing that,” said Rachel McCoy, his teacher. “They're all super excited about seeing him for graduation tomorrow which we hope he'll be healthy and ready to come to – they're all just looking at it from a positive light.”
